New Nascar fan here! What are fans listening to on the headphones at the track? Where do you get them? Do I have to buy them before I get there? Do you recommend them?
What are race fans listening to at NASCAR tracks on those headphones?

They are listening to scanners. The drivers and crew chiefs radios. You can buy them or rent them at the track .You can also get Pit command from Nascar .com and listen to the radios. It really is exciting to hear everything when it is happening!
^^^What he said. I highly recommend them, you get a different perspective of the race
They are called scanners and the people that have them are listening to radio communications between the drivers, spotters and crew chiefs.
If you go to races a lot a scanner is the ONLY way to enjoy the race. I suggest you buy good headset because they will keep the track noise out and you can hear the drivers better. you also can listen to the radio broadcast with no commercials. You can buy a scanner at the track but you will OVER PAY big time I suggest Radio Shack they have the best prices. Good luck.
They are scanners..you can listen to the drivers, crew chiefs, and here all their pit strategies……i highly recommend one…..buy it from radio shack or somewhere similar….the cost to rent one is the same to buy one…….just dont buy it at the track, its like 3x’s the cost!!!!
Have Fun!!!!
GO HARVICK & RCR!!!!
Usually they are listening to crew chief to driver audio feeds, as well as NASCAR race control, and the spotters talking to their driver.
Nowadays Sprint offers FanView, not sure about the purchasing details but it is a pretty nifty gadget.
Some people have simply am/fm radios. Most have scanners. You can listen to all the team communications-spotter, driver, crew chief, etc. This can be extremely entertaining especially following incidents on the track. Also, there are channels to Nascar officials, safety officials, weather, etc. Yes, they are highly recommended. I couldnt imagine not having them. They also shield the brain shattering volume of the cars.
Scanners for in car audio are the way to go. And, like everyone else said, Radio Shack is probably your best bet. I’ve seen them on sale for as low as $50.

Welcome to NASCARnation. I suggest you rent the Nextel/Sprint Fanview. It is the best. You can view the entire track as the cars go around. They also choose several in-car cams each race that you can switch to to see what the driver is doing. It will also allow to select what you want to listen to: The track announcer, MBN radio broadcast, or choose in car radio of your favorite driver. The best deal is to rent it for the entire weekend.
If you plan on being at several races each season. It is worth the investment to purchase the unit. (It currently $415.00 for unit and 1 set of headphones)
I was in Daytona this year and rented the unit w/ 2 headsets for $90.00 for Thursday thru Sunday. Each track can have different pricing. My Hubby and our friend were watching practice for the parking lot. Also when Jeff Gordon’s car broke I quickly switched to his radio and in car camera and heard and saw what was happening. It is very easy to use. And NO, I do not work for Sprint. I am a NASCAR fan who believes in this great product!
I tried them, but had a hard time understanding them half the time.
They’re scanners, and I highly recommend them for a few reasons.
1) The headphones double as ear protection against the roar of 43 unmuffled V-8 engines. Definitely a good thing.
2) You can listen to the drivers talking with their crew chiefs and spotters, as well as listen to MRN or the television commentary so you can get more insight into the race. The “behind the scenes” conversations are pretty amusing… without the nasty FCC editing. ::grin::
3) You can rent them at the tracks (there are a couple of different brands out there, you’ll see their trailers on the midway), but if you go more than a couple of times a year, it makes just as much sense to buy your own.
I’m not a big fan of the Nextel FanView – I figure if I’m going to spend my time watching the race on TV, I may as well just stay home and watch it on a 40″ screen rather than a 4″ screen.
Race Scanners–You can Hear conversations among Driver-Crew Chief-Spotters!!!!!!!
